About rented equipment and meals
For better comfort and organization, we do not place equipment inside personal suitcases. Each participant is provided with a trekking backpack that includes the rented equipment, where they can carry their personal belongings during the hike. At the end of the hike, all equipment must be returned complete and in good condition; any damage will be the responsibility of the participant.
The service includes a specific list of equipment. If you choose not to use any of the included items, the price remains the same, as the package already includes a discounted rate when booking the guide service.
Food is normally the responsibility of each participant, who must bring their own meals.
As an optional add-on, BaruExpedition can coordinate a food service with qualified external providers.
BaruExpedition selects and coordinates these providers and acts only as an intermediary in the management and delivery of the meals, and is not the direct food preparer.
We are happy to provide guidance to help you plan your meals, and if you prefer us to include them, we can coordinate this service at an additional cost.
The guidance provided is general in nature and does not replace professional medical or nutritional advice. Each participant is responsible for consulting a healthcare professional if they have any special dietary conditions and for informing us in advance when booking the service.
Schedules & Logistics
Starting point: Los Llanos de Paso Ancho
Day Hike (ascent and descent during the same day): 4:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Night Hike (for sunrise): We leave town at 9:00 p.m., arrive at the trailhead, complete the check-in process (registration, permits, etc.), and start hiking around 10:00 p.m. We reach the summit at approximately 5:00 a.m.
The return time depends on the group’s pace and how long you choose to stay at the summit. Most groups return between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
If you feel you are in strong physical condition and can move faster, you’re welcome to suggest your own departure and estimated arrival time based on your pace. However, making it in time for sunrise will then be your responsibility.
These time estimates are based on the average hiker and are designed to help most people achieve the goal of seeing the sunrise after completing the hike on the trail, although it is not guaranteed, as some hikers may not reach the summit.
Two-Day / One-Night Camping: Arrival at the crater before 6:00 p.m., camp setup, preparation for sunrise.
Recommended lodging: Near the town of Volcán
Includes general information about transportation, packing list, and food recommendations.
Transportation & Logistics Options
Participants may choose:
One-way service, taking care of their own return; or
Round trip with our transport service.
Transportation is adjusted according to the starting and ending points (Boquete, Volcán, Cerro Punta, or David).
Transportation deposit: 50% required to confirm the service.
About transportation:
If guests prefer to arrange their own transportation, they will receive the guide’s location so they can pick him up and head together to the starting point of the hike.
However, if they choose to include transportation service, they just need to share their location, and the guide will pick them up directly to begin the adventure.
If the visitor decides to handle the logistics of their own transportation to the base of Volcán Barú from any location (rental vehicle, taxi, Uber, or other public transportation services), they should take into account that responsibility for schedules, fares, availability, or any situation related to the transportation lies exclusively with the visitor and the service provider hired. We do not assume responsibility for transportation services arranged directly by the visitor. Responsibility for transportation logistics applies only when the private transportation service is arranged through us.
Guide Fees & Reservation Policies
Daily capacity: Maximum of 68 people allowed on the trail (including guides), as per park regulations.
Guide capacity: Up to 10 people per guide. Groups larger than 10 must hire an additional guide.
Guide Fee
$250 per group for 1 to 5 people who book and take the tour together as a single group. This rate applies only when the participants are part of the same group from the time of booking and does not apply to combining independent individuals or groups.
Additional Guests:
6th person: $50 extra.
7th to 10th persons: $25 extra per person.
The group can have a maximum of 10 people.
Booking and Deposit Policy
Hikes / Treks (Guide Service):
To start the reservation process, a 10% deposit is required, which allows us to check and secure availability with the park authorities. Once the date is confirmed, the remaining 90% is paid before the hike begins or at the time of equipment delivery, if applicable.
Additional Services (transportation, meals, or others):
A 100% deposit is required to confirm the reservation.
Camping Equipment Rental:
A 100% deposit is required to secure the equipment.
If the equipment is delivered prior to the hike (for example, at the client’s accommodation), full payment must be made at that time, before delivery.
Promotions:
When a promotion applies specifically to the guiding service, the reservation is confirmed with a 50% deposit of the agreed price.
Policy: Deposits are non-refundable; date changes are negotiable.
Collective Groups / Shared Slots
Trips that, by mutual agreement between the parties or for operational reasons, are carried out under a collective or shared modality —whether because other travelers join a previously scheduled date or because a trip originally booked as private becomes shared— do not automatically imply a change in the agreed price.
Access to Barú Volcano and logistical considerations
Access to Barú Volcano is distributed between two different districts: Boquete and Tierras Altas, and each district offers a unique and exclusive type of access.
The Boquete district has the only vehicular road that allows access by 4×4 vehicles to very close to the summit of the volcano. From the point where vehicles stop, the highest point of the summit is reached on foot, approximately 10 minutes walking.
The Tierras Altas district has the only official hiking trail leading to the summit of Barú Volcano, known as the Los Llanos de Paso Ancho trail, where the entire ascent is done on foot.
Travel by vehicle between the Boquete district and the Tierras Altas district, or vice versa, takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and driving speed. These connections may be used as part of the tour logistics or as a linking route between access points.
It is important to consider this distance when planning your experience:
— If you are staying in Boquete and wish to hike via the trail, you must allow time for vehicle transfer to Tierras Altas.
— If you are staying in Volcán / Tierras Altas and wish to access the volcano by vehicle via Boquete, the same transfer time must also be considered.
Joining an Existing Group – Important Note
When available, clients may have the option to join an already established group. Please note that joining an existing group does not automatically imply a reduced rate. Any price adjustment depends on the specific logistics of the tour, group size, guiding structure, and operational requirements for that date. In some cases, a partial adjustment may be possible; in others, the rate remains unchanged, as the overall responsibility, coordination, and professional service provided are the same. Each case is evaluated individually.
The 10% deposit can be made via online banking (international transfer, with additional cost) or through Western Union, which is usually a more direct option. Please note that any transfer fees or commissions are covered by the client. Let us know your preferred payment method so we can provide the necessary details and continue with the booking process.
