IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT WATER AND BACKPACK WEIGHT

During a camping trek on Volcán Barú, a significant part of the physical effort comes from the total weight you must carry.

Normally, each participant carries approximately 35 to 45 pounds (16 to 20 kg) in total, depending on personal gear and the logistics chosen.

This weight is usually divided as follows:

💧 Water and Personal Items

Participants usually carry 6 liters of water:

• 3 liters for the first day
• 3 liters for the second day

6 liters of water equals approximately:

• 6 kilograms
• 13.2 pounds

In addition to this, you will also carry:

• Food for two days
• Extra clothing
• Warm layers
• Camera, electronics, and personal items

This portion alone can represent between 20 and 25 pounds (9 to 11 kg), depending on each person.

⚠️ About Water on the Mountain

Along the route, there is a place where some people usually collect water.

However, this is not a flowing natural spring, but rather a naturally stagnant water source.

For this reason, drinking from it is not recommended because:

• The water is not in constant circulation
• It can become contaminated easily
• Frequent passage of people can affect its cleanliness

For safety and to avoid problems during the experience, it is strongly recommended to carry all the necessary water from the beginning.

🎒 Camping Equipment

The remaining weight usually comes from:

• Sleeping bag
• Sleeping pad / sleeping mat
• Main backpack
• Trekking poles
• Tent
• Dry bags
• Headlamp
• Cooking or camping equipment

This equipment usually represents between 15 and 20 pounds (7 to 9 kg), depending on the group’s gear distribution.

🚙 OPTIONS TO REDUCE WEIGHT

If you prefer a more comfortable experience, there are several options to reduce the load:

• Better distribution of equipment among participants
• Sharing part of the equipment
• Sending part of the equipment by vehicle
• Light Experience (partial transport of camping equipment)

One very useful option is sending the second day’s water by vehicle to the summit.

This allows you to avoid carrying those extra 3 liters during the first day, significantly reducing weight during the ascent and making the descent much more comfortable.

⚠️ The Light Pack Experience and other logistical support alternatives are explained in the general information previously sent. We recommend reviewing it carefully.

⚠️ Important:

Reducing weight does not mean changing the trekking experience — it means enjoying it better with less physical strain.
